8.3 Favorite stories
Two things…
First, these are stories I love by writers who are not all that well known and I just wanted to share them with you.
And second, for me these stories have that magic where the authors are using words to say more than words can say.
Laura Pritchett
Hell’s Bottom, Colorado
In a time when so many short stories are focused on capturing the despair of our age, these stories are infused with a sweet sense of nurturance.
Linda Mullaly Hunt
One for the Murphys
This is a middle–grade book that captures the human experience of dilemma better than any philosopher could.
Stephanie Vaughn
Sweet Talk
Her only book of stories. I wish she’d write more. My favorite is “Snow Angel.”
Marjorie Dorner
Winter Roads, Summer Fields
Stories of a farming community. Dorner holds these people in her heart as she tells us about them. My favorite is “Herbert.”
Katherine Anne Porter
Flowering Judas
Not as well known as she once was. My favorite story is, “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall.”
Siobhan Fallon
You Know When the Men Are Gone
A chance to experience a world I knew nothing about, the lives of military wives and families.
Margaret Meyers
Swimming in the Congo
The blurb on the book cover describes this as “Anne of Green Gables meets Heart of Darkness.” Enough said.
I hope to be adding more authors as time goes on.
And if you have a favorite author, not that well known, whose stories have the magic of layers and richness and depth and nurturance, please email me and let me know. Thanks!
