5.3 Storyboarding
Have you ever tried storyboarding?
Lots of film directors use it. They sketch out every shot for the film they’re making, scene by scene. It’s like they’re writing a comic book in successive panels.
They do this so they can get a visceral feel for the whole film. And so they know they have compelling narrative drive throughout the film from start to finish.
It also saves them time and money, if they know exactly what they’re going to shoot each day when they arrive on set. Which saves them time and in film making a little bit of time is big money.
What I like about the visual strategy of storyboarding is that…
It’s a combination of right-brain and left-brain abilities.
And you don’t have to be an artist to do the sketching. You can use stick figures. The point is not how pretty the storyboard is but that…
You get to play with your story.
What about those of us who write nonfiction? We can use storyboarding, too, to play with our message.
Here’s a video explaining the process in a down–to–earth way.
